Allan Watts has focused his practice almost exclusively on patent law since 1999 after working with technology
for ten years as an engineer. Most of his practice has been preparing patent applications, pushing patent
applications through the Patent Office, and advising clients in development of patent portfolios.
While other firms use junior associates and recently-hired contract attorneys to prepare patent applications
and to argue patentability before the Patent Office, Mr. Watts performs these tasks himself. Mr. Watts’
skill and experience results in a higher level of quality and better end results for his clients. Mr. Watts’
legal experience also includes patentability searching, patent infringement investigations, intellectual property
agreement drafting and negotiation, and IP due diligence for mergers and acquisitions.
Mr. Watts’ technological background is in mechanical and electrical equipment and he also has considerable
recent experience in patent protection of software, e-commerce, and business methods. Mr. Watts is a professional
engineer (PE), is a former section chair of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and is a volunteer Venture
Ready Panelist where he coaches startup business on patent and IP strategy.
